Have you ever wondered what it’s like to whiz through Fredericksburg in an authentic railroad cart? The iconic railway is an unforgettable part of Rappahannock County history. While playing on railroads is never a good idea, one local museum offers the chance to experience railroad fun in a safe environment.
Hop aboard the Rappahannock Railroad Museum’s Rail Excursion, and get a glimpse of history as you ride along Deep Run.
A Real Rail Excursion
To be a part of the Rappahannock Railroad Museum’s Rail Excursion, you should make plans to visit the museum on a Saturday morning. Railroad rides are offered every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon, so long as it’s not raining and the temperature is above 40 degrees. No reservations are required, and perhaps best of all, admission is free. Donations to fund operations are accepted, however.
You’ll ride aboard a special cart that starts near Spotsylvania Business Park and goes along Deep Run. It’s part of the Little Yellow Train, a complete Maintenance of Way Train from the 20th century.
The train isn’t just a fun way to see the town, it’s the premier exhibit of the museum and offers an oft-forgotten look into the history of railway maintenance. For years, trains like this one allowed maintenance crews to fix tracks and ensure their stability for the much larger freight and passenger trains. You’ll get to see what it was like working on the tracks in this small collection of track cars that was used between the 1930s and 1960s.
While at the museum, visitors will experience the view that the trainmen had from the cupola of the caboose and see the tools used by train workers of the past. You’ll also get to check out two restored cabooses and a Pennsylvania Railroad baggage car. Make sure to investigate the exhibits and artifacts housed within the Rappahannock Railroad Museum. The train ride is only half the fun here are the museum.
